Every other fashion week or so, I see something that makes me think, “What the fuck?” (and somehow, somewhere Anna Dello Russo is thrilled to bits about the very same thing). I adore that the world of fashion is full of nut jobs with striking, strange ideas, because that’s how interesting art happens, but frankly some concepts are just too wacky for me to wrap my head around. Shawna and I feel so strongly about this phenomenon over at Fond that we decided to create a regular WTF column to feature and profile such bizarreness, and we didn’t have to look too far for our first subject; did you see the hats at the recent Marc Jacobs Fall 2012 Ready to Wear show at New York Fashion Week? God love you, Marc, but WTF? These monstrosities made the models look like furry mad hatters on acid. Maybe I missed the memo that multicoloured Dr. Seuss mink tarantula headgear is the new thing; I just can’t figure out what would possess someone to go out and buy one of these. And yes, it bothers me that much. Nicole Phelps said “fearless”, I say “cray cray”. So there.
